Diamond ring, Red Lion Square, cut in Hatton Garden.

Lanes Fine Jewellery is an independent, family-owned jeweller in a Lincolnshire stone-market town. Owners Ercan and Carli Onguc, with a Bond Street and Hatton Garden background and an Istanbul jewellery family behind it, took the former Clarks unit on Red Lion Square in November 2022 and turned it into a two-floor showroom with consultation room upstairs. Bespoke design at the counter, certificated diamonds, and the same Birmingham and Hatton Garden masters cutting and setting every commission.

WHAT WE DO

Four lines of work. One desk. One Birmingham-and-Hatton-Garden bench behind it.

BESPOKE

Bespoke engagement and wedding rings

Designed at the counter with Carli, cut and set by the Birmingham and Hatton Garden masters Ercan has known and worked with for years. A CAD render before any metal is touched, so the ring you see on the screen is the ring you collect. GIA and IGI certificated diamonds, sourced through the same Bond Street and Hatton Garden network we have been part of for two decades. Six to ten weeks from first sketch to collection on most commissions.

WEDDING & ETERNITY

Wedding bands and eternity rings

Plain, diamond-set, patterned, two-tone, engraved. 18ct yellow, white and rose gold; platinum on commission. Bespoke fitted wedding bands shaped to an existing engagement ring, so the two rings sit together as one. Complimentary engraving on every band. Resizing handled on the premises from one hundred pounds per ring.

REPAIRS & REMODELLING

Repairs, alterations and remodelling

Re-sizing, claw re-tipping, re-rhodium plating, replacing diamonds, gemstones and pearls. Watch servicing on prestige movements only, Rolex, Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe. Inherited pieces remodelled into something you actually want to wear, with the stones kept and the metal melted or recast. Cleaning and polishing from eighty pounds.

VALUATIONS

Written valuations and pre-owned diamond purchase

Written insurance valuations by appointment, from one hundred pounds or one and a half percent of the total value, whichever is higher. Probate valuations on request. We also buy back pre-owned diamond jewellery directly, ethically, and at a fair desk-price decided in front of you, an honest alternative to the dealer-resale route.

Bond Street and Hatton Garden pedigree, brought to a stone-market town in Lincolnshire.

Ercan Onguc's family are jewellers in Istanbul, his trade was the family trade from the start. He moved to the UK and worked in the London jewellery districts, Bond Street first, then Hatton Garden, building the network of master diamond setters, polishers and mounters whose work still passes through the back room of every Lanes commission.

Carli is the desk and the dialogue, the person most engagement-ring customers first sketch with. The pair opened Lanes Fine Jewellery on Red Lion Square in November 2022, in the former Clarks unit they had quietly liked for years. The Leicester store has since closed, Stamford is now the only Lanes shop, and the larger upstairs consultation room is the room every bespoke brief is sketched in.

“We came to Stamford and absolutely fell in love with the town. It is a stunning place and people are lovely.” Carli Onguc, Stamford Mercury, 15 November 2022

THE BENCH BEHIND THE COUNTER

Where the ring is actually cut, set and finished.

Lanes does not run a bench inside the Stamford showroom. The work is done by the same Birmingham and Hatton Garden masters Ercan worked with through his London-trade years, every one of them a named, working specialist with a bench that has been theirs for years.

  • Hatton GardenDiamond setters and polishers, the part of the trade that has always done this work in Britain.
  • BirminghamGoldsmiths and mounters, the Jewellery Quarter mounters who cast, build up and finish the ring.
  • StamfordCounter, sketch, CAD review, stone selection, written valuation, hand-over.

A typical bespoke commission runs six to ten weeks from first sketch to collection on Red Lion Square. The CAD render is reviewed and signed off before any metal is touched, and the certificated diamond is selected with you, not behind glass.

CERTIFICATED GIA & IGI Every diamond above 0.30ct, certificate kept with the piece.
CADENCE 6 to 10 weeks Sketch · CAD review · stone selection · bench · collection.

FAQ · FIVE QUESTIONS WE GET MOST

Short answers, then bring the piece or the brief in.

Where is the ring actually cut and set if there is no workshop in Stamford?

In Birmingham and Hatton Garden, by the same master diamond setters, polishers and mounters Ercan has worked with for years out of his London-trade time. The dialogue, the CAD review, the stone selection and the final fitting all happen at 4 Red Lion Square. The bench work happens in the two places in Britain where this work has always been done. Most commissions run six to ten weeks from first sketch to collection.

Do you really beat the high-street chain prices?

On bespoke, frequently by hundreds of pounds. Our customers regularly mention this in their reviews. We are not paying a national-chain marketing budget or a shopping-centre rent, and our diamond network does not have a chain of middlemen between us and the cutter. Bring a chain quote in and we will price the same piece honestly. If the chain is genuinely cheaper on a like-for-like, we will tell you.

Can you remodel a ring I have inherited?

Yes, this is regular work. We keep the stones, recover the gold (or recast it into the new band), and design something you will actually wear. Most remodels are agreed at one consultation, sketched, then CAD-reviewed before any metal is touched. A bench team in Birmingham and Hatton Garden does the work. We can also remount loose diamonds into a new setting, and re-tip claws on a piece that is otherwise sound but at risk of losing a stone.

Do you do written insurance valuations?

Yes, by appointment. From one hundred pounds or one and a half percent of the total value, whichever is the greater. Probate valuations are quoted on request. Bring the piece and any original certificates, GIA or IGI, and we will issue a written valuation document suitable for your insurer.

Are you closed on Sundays and bank holidays?

Yes, normally closed Sundays and bank holidays. Monday to Saturday 09:30 to 17:00. Walk-ins welcome for browsing and quotes. For bespoke consultations, written valuations and pre-owned diamond purchase, an appointment is best so the right person is at the desk and the upstairs consultation room is free.
